
West Africa. The first 11 days of Feb have seen only light rain in Côte d’Ivoire. Veriground stations reported small amounts each day at about a half-dozen of 75 sites. Rain at the end of Jan nevertheless left the 30-day sum within the typical range for early Feb. In Ghana, rain continued almost every day. Only five of 40 sites reported no rain during 1-10 Feb. A few sites saw more than 25 mm. Average accumulation from late Jan to 11 Feb exceeded 20 mm/site.
Forecasts see rain moving from Ghana to Côte d’Ivoire. By 14 Feb, rain should reach almost all monitored sites in Côte d’Ivoire and should continue to 15 Feb. Rain will decrease in Ghana as it moves to Côte d’Ivoire. Forecasts see almost no rain in Ghana during the coming week.

Veriground stations are reporting that 10-day average high temperatures in Côte d’Ivoire have been 4°C below the average of reports from past seasons. In Ghana, temperatures have been 3°C below past seasons. This is due to where the stations report. As the number of Veriground stations has increased, most of which now are away from cities, the average of Veriground reports has moved toward actual temperatures where crops grow.
In Nigeria, national reports show no rain. Residents report light rain.
Other areas. Rain has slowed in Ecuador’s cocoa areas according to national stations but has escalated at Veriground sites to 75 mm in the past 10 days and almost 150 mm in the latest 30 days. In Brazil, rain near Bahia’s cocoa area has returned to normal after five months of half-normal rain. Rain in Para’s cocoa area is following its normal path to its high-rain period. Rain in Peru’s cocoa area has decreased once again to half of normal. Rain in Sulawesi continues at rates often above normal. No problems with the crops have been reported. A positive effect of heavy rain in Indonesia is that it slows the spread of the pod borer insect. ENSO. No change and no new information. Changes threatened by the Trump administration for NOAA could reduce ENSO monitoring.
